Beauty wonders and horrors. Place to share your experience.
What exactly is the difference between depilation and epilation? Epilating leaves us without any hair on the skin’s surface for much longer, as when we epilate we remove our hair with follicles. I was so tired of shaving every single day that I finally decided I needed to look further. This time I figured I won’t put poor Linda at risk (you can read about our depilation cream experience) and try out something that would keep me hairless for longer by myself. As my holiday departure day was approaching, I had to make up my mind. When I was leaving the store with my new Braun Silk Epil epilator in a bag I thought my problem was solved.
Needless to say, little stupid me had to wear pants for the first two days of my vacation.
It wouldn’t be that bad if I just did my legs and stop. No! I wanted that smooth bikini line. When I figured I can handle the pain on my legs if enough glasses of wine get consumed, I thought I am ready to get rid of my bikini line hair.
The pain was enough to make my heart ready to jump out of my chest, my eyes watering, my hair getting up, my feet going cold, and red and black spots pulsing in my eyes. When I glanced down there I thought I have spilled some wine, only then I realized it was blood! I am a brave girl, but I was screaming for Novocain. And the sound of metal rotating tweezers didn’t make it better for me either. Never again! Never again!
Using an epilator on the hair that has been shaved is very painful (especially bikini and underarms). When frequently shaved the hair becomes thicker. Using an epilator on that hair is a torture. It will be less painful if you start using the epilator after your hair has been waxed at least once. Epilating makes your hair thinner and easier to remove, thus causes less pain in the future.
Although, after three uses the pain wasn’t diminishing for me, so I buried my epilator at the bottom drawer (…only now I think as an electric device it probably wanted a cremation better…hm).
Lessons learnt:

1. You need the hair to be of a certain length before you can epilate.
2. Make sure that you pull the skin tight. This prevents snagging and makes the hair removal treatment less painful.
3. Epilators are better to use after having a warm shower or bath as it opens the pores and the process is not so painful.
4. Epilators can cause bruises if you don’t hold them at the right angle.
5. You should not go tanning for a day or two after epilating.

Hey Naomi!
I would still recomend wax! It is more gentle for your skin! And less pain I have to say.
Make sure to generously apply the wax. And be aware that it dries extremely quickly and is awful to get off once it’s gone hard. Make it small areas, with generous amount of wax, and don’t wait too long. If you don’t want to go to the professional, apply wax only on the flat areas, so you don’t hurt yourself with hot wax and don’t damage sensitive skin.
Hey, I’m sure you can do it! The good thing is that when you get used to it, it doesn’t hurt that bad anymore:)

I tried epilating and it was fine at first then the epilator started pulling on my skin in stead of just my hair…is there anyway to stop this? I only epilate my underarms and at first i thought my epilator spoilt so i got a new one but it had the same problem and it was too soon to spoil….is there anything else i can do about this?

i guess to ease the pain alittle bit would be to numb the skin with ice before you attempt to epilate…it works perfectly with me =)

removing pubic hair with epilator is the best way. fortnightly removal for brazilian.

i use a Veet Cream and a Spatula that is included in the pack. It says leave it there for 3 minutes (I leave it for 3-4mins instead, till i cleanse my face etc) and then wipe it all off in a tissue and remove the remaining in the shower. It works fine, actually i find it very good. No pain at all.. I do it once every 2 weeks or a little more, depends on the mood XD

I used an epilator for about a year and a half on my arms, underarms and legs. I found that it made my hair grow back thicker and coarser and I really wish I’d never bought the thing! oh and it also gave me ingrowing hair which i never had before

Hair does not, in fact, grow back thicker or denser after being shaved. This is a myth. Regrowth after shaving feels coarse and thick because the shaft of the hair has been cut straight across, leaving a blunt edge, whereas hair that has re-grown after being removed from the root grows back with the natural taper and therefore feels softer. Hair that is removed from the root will grow back thinner, but as I have stated, this does not work in reverse.

I have been epilating for 15 years now and I am very pleased with the results every time. I agree that the bikini line is a very sensitive area and you need an epilator that is better suited/shaped for that part. I strongly recommend Emjoi EpiSlim Compact (operates on batteries too) and it only costs $19.99. Yes, it is painful but you do get used to it after a while. And the results are fabulous. It took me several years before I summoned the courage to try and epilate the bikini line area but I do no regret it as now I’m getting wonderful long-lasting results within less than 5 minutes. When it comes to other parts of the body, I think a regular epilator like Braun does a great job, even on armpits although you still need to be careful and pull the skin tight.
